Axial Flux Technology

Axial flux electric machines offer excellent torque and power densities especially for short length applications. Despite this know benefit the technology has only recently seen a renaissance as improvements in manufacturing technologies have opened ways to economically build these machines.

The axial topology inherently makes better use of available space and as a result requires less material compared to a conventional motor. This is especially important for magnets which are a dominant part of motor cost  for synchronous and brushless DC motors (BLDC).

The geometric difference between axial flux and radial flux topologies is shown below. The disc shape of the machine offers special benefits when available length is limited for example in Range Extender applications.
